The plastic disc is only an add on and is not necessary. With continuous wear, the plastic disc may fall off of the metal back or crack due to oils, humidity, chemicals like hair spray and makeup, and normal wear and tear. Rest assured, the backs are still functional without the plastic disc as the plastic disc is just an add on and can be removed at any time.
